Chris Hellman's new works on paper continue to document her careful exploration and examination of natural forms. Challenged by the exact and perfect organization of flower, bud, pod, leaf, and shell, Hellman looks for and exposes their ambiguous and abstract potential as well as their symmetry. Seed posds appear to be conversing; a pair of calyxes dancing; strands of seaweed shoot comet-like across the white paper ground, and mussels drawn broadside look whale-like as they fill the page. Hellman's ability to create a dynamic within the pictures' content and to vivify what she first presents as mere specimens, gives her painting a spin that is both clever and shrewd.
