In her second exhibition at the gallery, Jennie Smith continues to showcase her ability to create lush and delicate worlds where fantasy and narrative coincide. Depictions of animals still exist in Smith's drawings, but new characters are introduced through clothing. Native American and Buddhist monk robes take on a life of their own as they float along the image plain. The physical bodies that normally inhabit these garments are absent creating a haunting resonance for the viewer who realizes that for these small communities life goes on.
Smith was born in 1981 in San Francisco, California where she currently lives and works. She received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Her previous projects include the Bulletin Board at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2006); her work was also featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, New York. Smith's work is in the collections of The Drawing Center, New York and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
